ISMail ServersISMail contains the mail servers: SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4. The mail servers may be started, stopped, and automatically started using the ISMail Manager (see Starting ISMail). The ISMail Manager must be running to start the mail servers. The SMTP server is used to send and receive mail betwen different machines on the internet or local area network (LAN). The POP3 and IMAP4 servers are used to retrieve mail that was previously received by the SMTP server and stored on the hard disk. The IMAP4 server can also be used to manipulate files on the mail server. The POP3 and IMAP4 servers can be accessed by an email client program on the mail server machine, or an email client program on any other machine connected to the internet or LAN. The SMTP server uses port 25 for sending and receiving mail. The POP3 server uses port 110. The IMAP4 server uses port 143. |
