Archival

Message archival is used to create a copy of all messages sent through or received by ISMail.

Archival may be used to facilitate compliance with email policies and practices or organizational accountability requirements.

Archived messages are stored in special accounts whose names are determined by the account name of the user sending or receiving the message. Each special account is named by prefixing 'archive-' to the user name (e.g. archive-user1@mydomain.com). Archive accounts may be examined with any email client program by creating an account 'archive-user1@mydomain.com' where 'user'1 is the user account name, and 'mydomain.com' is the domain name containing the user account.

Since archived message accounts can become quite large, the archive files may be stored off-line by a general system backup utility and then deleted. Archived files are named as '..\ISMail\mail\mydomain.com\archive-user1\INBOX' where '..' is the prefix of the ISMail installation path, 'mydomain.com' is the domain which contains the archive account, and 'archive-user1' is the name of the archive account, The archive file is always named 'INBOX' since this is the mail file read by email clients.
